The Moon, Mars, Basketball Hoop
The Moon and Mars are getting closer one another. Saturn must be somewhere around but I couldn’t spot it. Well, it doesn’t matter coz I’ve got my own hoop here. It’s a quiet night, tonight.
月と火星がどんどん近づいている。土星もその辺にいるはずだけど、見つからなかった。ま、どうでもいいや、輪っかならこっちにもあるし。。。静な夜だなあ。
The Hoop, Board and Net バスケのリングとボードとネット
The net has arrived and already hooked to the hoop, but the basketball I ordered at the same time is not here yet.
ネットが来て、リングに着けちゃった。でも、同時に注文したバスケットボールがまだ。
The next door neighbor happened to have one and she let me use the ball for taking photos.
お隣さんがたまたまボールを持っていたので、写真を撮るのに貸してもらった。
What I really wanted to get was a basketball with colorful Kieth Haring’s Illustrations on it; however, only smaller ones for kids are available on market. I couldn’t be helped but choosing the black one with Keith Haring patterns. I am expecting it arriving soon.
ほんとはキース・ヘリングのイラストがついたカラフルなやつが欲しかったんだけど、子供向けの小さいのしかない。しかたなく同じキース・ヘリングの絵が描いてある黒の地味めなのを頼んだ。はやく来ないかなあ。。。
The Hoop and Board バスケのリングとボード
When I was driving my Fiat 500 on a mountain road some years ago, I noticed an unusual object in the roadside bush. I pulled it out of the grass and it was a basketball ring.
何年か前、フィアット５００で山の中をドライブしていたら何か変なものが道端のヤブの中に顔をのぞかせていた。草から引っ張りだしたらバスケットボールのゴールリングだった。
A basketball ring? But why in the mountain? Well, I thought it was illegally dumped, and decided to bring it back home, because I always dreamed of having a basketball goal above the garage like ones I saw in the States.
へ？バスケの輪っか？でも何で山ん中に？まあ不法投棄だろうなと思って、持って帰ることにした。アメリカでよく見かけたガレージの上に付いているやつみたいなのを欲しいなあと常々思ってたから。
However, the ring was much much heavier than I thought and I kinda regretted as soon as I picked it up– not just heavy, it looked huge on the rear seat of the miniature-sized Cinquecento, Ever since then, the hoop had been sleeping in the garage until yesterday morning, when I started to build the supporting beams and the board.
ところが、リングは思っていたよりめっちゃ重くて、拾い上げたとたんにちょっと 後悔した。重いだけじゃなく、ちっこいチンク号の後席でリングは巨大に見えた。それ以来ずっと輪っかはうちのガレージで眠っていた、、、支持梁とボードを作り始めた昨日の朝までは。
The job’s done! Whoops! I realized I hadn’t order a net and a basketball, yet! Gotta buy ‘em from Amazon or somewhere, now.
完成っ！、、、わっ！ネットとボールを持ってなかったんだった。すぐアマゾンかどっかで買わなきゃ。
The Moon and Mars
Looking out of the kitchen window, I noticed by chance a red star dimly but steadily twinkling just above the mountain ridge across the valley.
台所の窓からふと外を見ると、谷向かいの山の端から少し上に真っ赤な星がほの暗く、しかしくっきりと光っていた。
It turned out what I took for a star was actually a planet: Mars. Because of its low altitude, the light from Mars travels a long distance through the atmosphere, thus the higher frequencies of the light spectrum are filtered out by the airborne particles and it becomes reddish. Mars is originally red even without the filter effect, and the effect has added vividness to its color. (Unfortunately the photos couldn’t reproduce the color.)
「星」と思ったのは実は惑星：火星だった。高度が低いので火星の光は大気中を長い距離通過し、それゆえ浮遊物質によって光のスペクトルの短波長域が濾し取られ、赤っぽくなる。フィルターされなくても火星は元から赤いのだが、その効果で色に鮮やかさが加わっていた。（残念ながら写真では色の再現はできていないのだが）
