お決まりのトムヤムクンは撮ったのに、鶏肉たっぷりのガイヤーンが来た時には食い気に走ってしまった。。。 ＠出町Kroon
僕が、外食時に料理の写真を撮らない、というのをやめたら、友人から「変節した」と揶揄されたが、その彼だって以前は「旅にカメラを持ち歩くなんて」と言っていたくせに、最近やたらにSNSで食べ物の写真を投稿してるんだから。（笑）
撮影の可否は基本的に、店の雰囲気や周囲の客、それに同席者への気配りがどれだけできるかによるのだろうが、はたして僕はできているだろうか。。。
写真を取るという行為で周りが見えなくなる輩が多いし、その一人にはなりたくない、とは思ってきた。それは今も変わらない。
旨そうなガイヤーンを目の前にして写真を撮り忘れたのはある意味冷静さを欠いていたわけだし、逆にその前後にスマホでカシャカシャ撮ってた時に、いや普段から、どれだけの配慮ができていたかちょっと心もとない。
ただ、それは別にして、写真を忘れるほど料理に目が行ったってこと、後で思い返すと実はちょっと嬉しい。
When excavating old stuff in the storage of my former house, my son just found a piece of wood, which was a part of rotten remains of the cradle I made for my son.
昔の家の物置を掘り返していたら、息子が木の破片を見つけた。それは僕が彼のために作ったゆりかごの腐った残りかすだった。
On the piece was a memo I scribbled: “completed two weeks before Christmas”; my son’s birthday was December 2７th. of the year I made it. I just recalled the days I was working on the cradle, waiting for the news of delivery from my then wife in the distant prefecture. Now it’s almost completely gone.
木片には「クリスマスの2週間前に完成」と僕が書いていて、息子はその年の１２月２７日に生まれたのだった。遠い他県の実家に帰っていたその時の連れ合いから出産の知らせがくるのを待ちながら、ゆりかご作りをしていたのを思い出した。もうそれもすっかり朽ち果ててしまったが。
There also was a kickscooter that I made. I bolted on a steering post with a handlebar to a normal skateboard I used to play with so that even my little boy could ride on it. After a couple of decades, all the rubber wheels have decayed but the rest is pretty much intact.
そこには僕が作ったキックスケーターもあった。小さかった息子でも乗れるようにと、ハンドルを自分が遊んでいた普通のスケボーにボルト留めしてやった。３０年ちかくも経つとゴムのホイールは全部腐り落ちていたけど、その他は結構ちゃんと残っていた。
I was the maker or them, my kid the user… we both got so sentimental with the unexpected memoirs popping out of the past that we couldn’t keep doing away things for a while…
僕がそれらを作って、息子が使った、、、ふたりとも思いもよらぬ懐かしい物の過去からの出現に感傷的になり、しばらくの間片付けの手が止まってしまった。。。
Virginia Burton’s “The Little House” was one of my favorite picture books. I used to dream of living in a small house way out in the country like the one in the book, and the dream did come true when I grew up.
But, the years went rushing by me and no longer do I live there. Though my house, unlike the one in the book, is not completely surrounded by urban buildings, things around the house and my life have so much changed.
Now that the house is empty and soon going to be vine-clad and buried among weeds, I am sadly thinking of its future.
バージニア・バートンの絵本『小さいおうち』は僕のお気に入りだった。ずっと田舎のこんな小さい家にいつか住むことを思い描いていた。で、おとなになって願いはかなう。
でも、時はあっという間に流れ過ぎ、今はもうそこには住んではいない。僕の家は絵本の中の家のように街のビルにびっしり囲まれちゃったわけじゃないけど、家の廻りの様子も僕自身の生活もすっかり変わってしまった。
今はもう空き家になってるから、じきにつる草に覆われ雑草に埋もれるのも時間の問題だろうなあ、と家の将来を悲しく思い遣っているところ。
夜晩く、家の前の山の中から聞こえてくる。。。「ほうほう・・・ ごろすけ ほうほう」の声。
ニホンフクロウの声は「ボロ着て奉公」とも聞こえるそうな。

The artist’s fun-loving disposition shares something with mine, I suppose, though I only know her through this YouTube clip.
When making fake Tibetan prayer wheels at grad school in the ’80s, I’d come up with an idea to install a small record disk with a stylus or a looped strip of magnetic tape with a pickup head, either of which was supposed to be driven by the rotation of the mani cylinder. With the built-in gimmick that could utter the recorded voice of chanting mantra in place of a sacred script, the fake mani wheel would have become the real MacCoy.
For some reason, however, I didn’t acturally realized the idea. But today, after a couple of decades, I have become pretty much inspired by this hilarious piece of art and getting renewed my motivation to do my long-forgotten work.
